SUPER KMART CENTER DEBUTS OPEN BETA ON META QUEST
METAVERSE, VRC., May 12th, 2022 In a speed never seen before the VRChat Kmart Development Team took three days and three nights to optimize, crunch, and stress test our most complex store to be functional and run buttery smooth natively on the Meta Quest VR headset. Carbon Blossom, VRChat Kmart's Public Relations and CCO, was excited to see Meta Quest users walk through the front doors for the first time. "I'm super proud of what this team accomplished to make Quest compatibility a reality for our Super Kmart Center location. Since this store opened in September, we've wanted to make it accessible to all members of our community. Thanks to the dedication of our development team, with extra credit to Pablo, we are happy to expand on the VRChat Kmart experience by bringing it in to the 21st century. We are ready to serve you in our full service grocery, restaurant, auto center and garden shop in addition to the home goods and apparel that have made us a staple of the VRChat community. And, as always, we are looking to hire happy faces to staff our locations!" Blossom said. PablosCorner, the main 3D modeler for the Super Kmart Center project and Development Team Lead had the following statement: "I'm honestly pretty happy with it. [The] process took a while, I learned a lot about optimization, but I'd say it was definitely worth it because now everyone can play together." Mark Thomas, the lead programmer on our Development Team and 3D modeler for the future Projec 60, had the following statement: "It's a great step for making sure Project 60 is also Quest compatible at a later date. Porting Udon was a little difficult cause the networking in VRChat was a little tricky, networked events specifically." Similar to its PC counterpart, Super Kmart Center on Meta Quest has functioning equipment such as price checkers, point of sales registers, and self-checkout units. Meta Quest does not require a PC to play VRChat and can work standalone over a Wi-Fi connection. VRChat is free to download from the Oculus store.
