KMART CORPORATION REPORTS MAY SALES RESULTS

TROY, Mich., June 6, 2020--Kmart Corporation (NYSE: KM) today reported, on a comparable store basis, consolidated sales increased 5.4% for the four week period ended May 29, 2020 over sales for the four weeks ended May 24, 2020. May sales in U.S. Kmart stores increased 5.9% and Builders Square increased 3.1% on a comparable store basis over the same period.

Total sales for the month from consolidated operations increased 2.7%. On that basis, sales amounted to $2,668 billion in May 2020, versus sales of $2,597 billion for the same period last year.

Sales from consolidated operations for the 17 weeks ended May 29, 2020 were $10,248 billion up 2.1% from $10,032 billion for the first 17 weeks of 2020. On a comparable store basis, U.S. Kmart stores rose 2.8% for the same period.

"During May, Kmart reported on-plan sales," said Floyd Hall, Chairman, President, and CEO. "These results were led by consumables, with solid performance in both hard and softlines. Specific areas showing particular strength include menswear, toys, home improvement, cosmetics, and pharmacy."

With this release of May sales, Kmart is aligning its comparable store reporting method for the 53 week 2020 fiscal year on the same basis as its principal competitors and the retail industry generally. The alternative method would have produced total comparable sales increases of 3.3% for the period and 1.7% for the year to date.

Kmart serves America with 2,149 Kmart and 168 Builders Square retail outlets, and operates 134 stores internationally. Kmart Corporation common stock is listed on the New York, Pacific, and Chicago Stock Exchanges.
